Why Choose JL Audio HO112R-W7AE Enclosed Car Subwoofer?
High Output Enclosures
JL Audio's patented High Output Enclosures are designed to deliver the ultimate high-performance bass experience with a rare combination of superb sound quality and awesome output.
JL Audio's patented, chamber-coupled port design (U.S. patent #6,625,292) wraps around the inner enclosure boundary and terminates just above the woofer, coupling the port output to the woofer's direct output.
Extensive Real-world Listening
This enclosure design has been carefully engineered to the optimum ported alignment for the 12W7AE-3 and has been fine-tuned through extensive real-world listening.
The high power handling of the 12W7AE, combined with the efficiency of this subwoofer system, produce a devastating performance combination. This subwoofer system is shipped wired, loaded and ready to connect via a five-way binding post terminal. While no grille is provided, the recessed mounting baffle provides some protection for the woofer.
Embroidered in Silver
The angled-back design saves precious cargo space by allowing the enclosure to fit tightly against the back of a vehicle's rear seat.Finish: Dark gray, high-grade automotive carpet, with black carpet on woofer baffle. "JL AUDIO" is embroidered in silver on the top surface of the enclosure. This also provides the necessary surface area and port length to maximize the performance of the W7AE driver.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
- • Why does my monoblock amplifier keep cutting out or going into protect mode when driving this sub?
The HO112R-W7AE uses a single 12W7AE-3 driver with a unique 3-ohm nominal impedance. If your amplifier is only stable down to 4 ohms, or if you have paired two of these boxes together down to a low 1.5-ohm load, the amp will overheat and trip protection.
- • Why is my amp running incredibly hot or producing a strong burning smell from the voice coil?
This is caused by amplifier clipping from an overdriven signal. The W7AE is strictly rated for 1000 watts continuous RMS; driving it with an uncalibrated gain knob or active "Bass Boost" will quickly scorch the massive voice coils.
- • Why do I hear a severe mechanical clacking or slapping sound during deep bass drops?
Because this is an aggressive ported enclosure, playing frequencies below the port tuning without an infrasonic filter causes the sub to lose air suspension. You must set a subsonic/infrasonic filter right around 25Hz to prevent the cone from over-excreting and bottoming out.
- • Why won't this 12-inch subwoofer enclosure physically fit through the opening of my trunk?
The High-Output (HO) slot-port design requires a massive internal chamber. At roughly 34" wide, 17" high, and 120 lbs, this box footprint is far too large for standard compact car trunks and is built primarily for SUVs or hatchbacks.
- • Why does the bass output sound muddy, sluggish, and completely out of phase with my music?
This occurs when the massive sound waves cancel out your front cabin speakers. Set your low-pass filter (LPF) sharply to 80Hz and flip the amplifier's phase switch between 0 and 180 degrees to properly align the timing.
- • Can I remove this 12W7AE driver and put it into a small, universal sealed wedge box?
Technically yes, but performance will suffer. The HO enclosure features a patented, chamber-coupled slot port tuned precisely to the exact parameters of the 12W7AE. Moving it to a generic box will heavily compromise its efficiency and extreme low-end output.
- • Why didn't my premium enclosure come with a grille to protect the massive foam surround?
JL Audio does not include a grille with this model. Instead, the box features a recessed mounting baffle that sinks the driver back from the front edge. You must keep loose trunk cargo fully clear of the moving cone to prevent tears.
- • What size speaker wire should I use to handle the massive current draw at the terminal cup?
Due to the heavy 1000W RMS power transfer, you should use high-quality 12 AWG or thicker pure oxygen-free copper (OFC) wire. Avoid thin 16 AWG or copper-clad aluminum (CCA) lines, which restrict voltage and build up dangerous heat.
